One Man Bomb Squad: Eagles defuses Hiromu in MetLife 【WGS】

Takahashi’s challenge falls short as Eagles scores significant first defence

Hiromu Takahashi battled Robbie Eagles in the semi main event of day two of Wrestle Grand Slam, eager to follow up on the prior week’s Korakuen return by reclaiming the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship he never lost in the ring.

The two men started fast with chops exchanged and high speed offense, neither one nor the other gaining a significant advantage and Hiromu avoiding Eagles’ signature Ron Miller Special and Turbo Backpack until the champion put the brakes on at the ropes and dropped a knee to the back of his challenger’s leg. A lope con giro followed up, and as he brought Hiromu inside, Eagles set to work on his opponent’s knee in earnest.

The knee clearly troubled Hiromu as he struggled to find space, getting some respite with a head scissor whip and gutting through the pain to land a shotgun dropkick down the ring apron line. A second shotgun would put Eagles into the corner when the champion went for the Turbo Backpack again, and as Eagles got frustrated and charged in on the challenger, he was pitched into the opposite corner with a belly to belly suplex.

Eagles would regain his composure and ring presence however, connecting a low 619 to the knee and then a springboard dropkick to the kneecap, leading into the Ron Miller Special. Yet Hiromu would make the ropes, and again blocked the Turbo Backpack, landing his trademark corner DVD. A sunsetbomb drove the air out of the champion’s body and Hiromu fired off a German suplex and a brutal lariat before Victory Royal got him two.

On the back foot, Eagles strung together a pair of pinning combinations, but even as Eagles fought out of a Victory Royal attempt, he was in the grips of the Time Bomb, Hiromu still not getting a three count. A brutal reverse DDT looked to open the door for Time Bomb II, but Eagles instead shifted his weight to get on the top rope; as Hiromu joined him upstairs, he was caught with a super Turbo Backpack from the champion. Taking aim, Eagles delivered a shot to the head with his boot, and as Hiromu was unable to avoid a 450 to the knee, and then the Ron Miller Special for the tapout victory.

El Desperado would interrupt Eagles’ post match celebration, requesting a rematch and using his freshly won IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship as a bargaining chip. Accepting the deal, Eagles stated that he and Tiger mask would be coming for the tag gold in exchange for Desperado hunting for the singles championship, but with the G1 Climax right aound the corner, we await a date and venue.
