G1 Special in USA weekend overview[la325]

New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s debut in the United States was a smashing success. We could not be more happy and proud of the results.

We want to take you through some of the highlights of each day and give you a glimpse into the future.

On Night 1 we saw a title change, 4 superstars advance in the tournament to crown the very first United States champion as well as main event featuring the IWGP Heavyweight Champion being challenged by the ROH World Champion.

War Machine stormed to the ring and asked for their planned IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Title match with G.O.D. be a No Disqualification match. G.O.D. accepted and the war commenced. Unfortunately for G.O.D. they would succumb to a Fallout through a table, allowing War Machine to become the new IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions for a second time.

In the IWGP US Title Tournament, Jay Lethal defeated Hangman Page, Zack Sabre Jr defeated Juice Robinson, “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega defeated “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin and Tomohiro Ishii defeated Tetsuya Naito to advance to the next round.

Our main event for Night 1 saw IWGP Heavyweight Champion “The Rainmaker” Kazuchika Okada defeat ROH World Champion “The American Nightmare” Cody

Night 1 aired exclusively on AXS TV in the US and was a huge success. It aired on the Fight Network in Canada and over 30 other plus countries live.

Night 2 aired exclusively on New Japan World and had many standout moments that you must see to believe.

The Young Bucks successfully defended their IWGP Junior heavyweight Tag Team Championships against Roppongi Vice. What happened next was shocking as Ricochet surprised the crowd by appearing and running off The Young Bucks. He also declared that he and Taguchi want the next shot at the Young Bucks championships!

Perhaps more shocking was Rocky Romero choosing to end Roppongi Vice and support Barretta’s move to the heavyweight division. It was extremely emotional and cant miss.

NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi announced to the delight of those who saw that New Japan Pro-Wrestling would return to the United States in early 2018

IWGP Intercontinental Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi turned back the challenge of Billy Gunn. Gunn brought everything he had, but “The Ace” was able to secure the victory to remain champion.

Kenny Omega defeated ROH’s Jay Lethal and Tomohiro Ishii defeated Suzuki Gun’s Zack Sabre Jr to advance to the finals of the IWGP United States Championship final.

In a must see match that left the wrestling world buzzing, “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega defeated Tomohiro Ishii to become the very 1st IWGP United States Champion.
