When he called out for Kota Ibushi to meet his request, few could argue with his choice. Ibushi’s shock win over Tanahashi in this year’s G1 proved that while he spent years away traveling the world, his desire to succeed in the New Japan ring has never been stronger. The finishing blow, Ibushi’s newly dubbed “Kamigoye”, was a clear show of respect to his opponent, who he looked up to as a wrestling “god” (“kami”, in Japanese).
