Tama seizes NEVER Openweight gold

NEVER Openweight Championship gold was on the line October 9 in Ryogoku, as Tama Tonga challenged champion David Finlay in a heated and personal encounter.

With David Finlay taking a suspicious amount of time to make his entrance the reasoning soon became apparent, the champion sneakily entering the ring behind Tama Tonga to viciously attack his challenger with the NEVER Openweight Championship. With the bell rung Finlay followed with a splitting spear and moved the fight to the outside, repeatedly crumpling Tama against the barricades and landing a series of merciless chair shots. The War Dogs leader set up a table on the outside, but his powerbomb attempt was thwarted as Tama fought out, although the respite was brief; Finlay launching his opponent through the barricade gate. Finally the BULLET CLUB man got his comeuppance, exposing the solid Ryogoku floor only to find himself falling victim to a Tongan Twist.

The match back in the ring Tama Tonga rained down forearms and knees onto the defenceless Finlay in the corner, a trio of exploder suplexes and a flying splash seeing the challenger firmly in control. A Tama Tonga plancha to the outside squashed Finlay and the assault continued, Tama getting a measure of revenge for the past months of anguish by continuously whipping Finlay into the barricades. But challenger attempted to whip champion one time too many, the Rebel catching his foe and tossing him head first into the unforgiving ringpost.

A lariat to the back of the head and perfect blue thunder-bomb allowed Finlay to continue the damage, a mean lariat and Dominator earning the champion a near-fall. After suffering a beating Tama was able to strike back though, his own lariat flooring Finlay and providing the time to hit SRC and head to the top rope for Supreme Flow; but Finlay brutally pushed Tama off the top. The action precarious on the apron with a sinister table at their feet, Finlay thrust Tama into the ringpost and was ultimately able to take advantage of his own contraption; a lethal powerbomb through the table crushing Tama Tonga.

Back in the ring Finlay dropped Tama with another powerbomb, reminiscent of their match earlier this year at Wrestling Dontaku, but as Finlay looked to end proceedings with Into Oblivion Tama Tonga stunned with a incredible Gun Stun counter. Both men wrecked, they exchanged strikes in the centre of the ring and sought their respective finishers, counters on counters with neither able to get a secure footing. Tama Tonga eventually caught Finlay with a Gun Stun but the champion somehow got his shoulder off the mat before the three count. The challenger now had the advantage though, following up with Styles Clash before delivering DSD to secure the win and regain the NEVER Openweight Championship.
