Jyushin Thunder Liger wrestles in Arena Mexico for the final time!

On Friday July 19, Jyushin Thunder Liger was in Mexico for his final match in the country before his retirment in the Tokyo Dome next year. Liger was in the main event of CMLL’s “El Adiós de Liger en México en la Arena México” in Arena Mexico.

The legendary Arena Mexico was sold out for the evening. After the semi main event finished, a special ceremony highlighted Jyushin Thunder Liger’s career achievements, attended by new CMLL president Sofia Alonso, her uncle, Japanese honorary consul Luis Luterroth, and Japan’s ambassador to Mexico, Yasushi Takase. Liger was presented with a special trophy, after which he was honoured by a special musical performance on traditional Japanese taiko drums.

The main event was a ‘Relevo CMLL’ match; one fall with no time limit. A four way pit Liger against three opponents he has a deep connection with; Negro Casas, Caristico and Ultimo Guerrero. While four way matches are more common in America and Japan, this was the first such match in CMLL since 1986.

In a unique twist to the conventional four way rules fans may be used to, two wrestlers started in ring, with the other two on the apron. Tags could be made at any time in or out of the ring, and first pinfall or submission decided the match (if all four participants were outside the ring for a twenty count, the match would have been a draw, but if one could break the count, he would win the match).

The match broke down in the end with all four participants fighting it out in the middle of the ring. It was Liger coming out on top though, as he landed a Liger Bomb on Casas. The worldwide phenomenon that is Jyushin Thunder Liger ended his Mexican career with a proud victory.
