BIOGRAPHY

One of Mexico’s most electrifying luchadors, the man now known as Ryu Lee first exploded on the international scene when a rivalry with Hiromu Takahashi caught attention around the world.

In Mexico, America, and then New Japan, Lee and Hiromu battled several times for a variety of championships, Lee’s athletic dynamism playing off Hiromu’s wreckless insanity. At G1 Special in San Francisco in 2018, Hiromu’s neck would be severely injured in a match with Lee, but Takahashi still pulled out a victory wrestling on pure adrenaline.

With Takahashi sidelined, Lee would battle Taiji Ishimori in May 2019 to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. Though he lost his title to Will Ospreay just a month later, his reign cemented himself as a favourite of loyal NJPW fans, who all speculated what would happen should he meet with rival Hiromu one more time.

When Takahashi returned to action, they did meet again, but as partners rather than opponents, the two teaming together to wrestle in Jyushin Thunder Liger’s last ever match in the Tokyo Dome. Hiromu would make it clear that the injury of July 2018 was water under the bridge, but their rivalry wasn’t; the two would battle for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship once more February 9 2020 in Osaka. On February 9 in Osaka, Ryu Lee unsuccessfully challenged Takahashi for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. Although he lost the match, Ryu Lee would always be willing to take on his eternal rival again.
