Double countout leads to title retention for Kingston
The STRONG Openweight Championship was on the line as part of the AEW Continental Crown January 13 at Battle in the Valley, Gabe Kidd getting a long desired rematch with Eddie Kingston for the gold.
A lot of punishment was meted out by both men before the match even began, challenger attacking champion on the entrance and delivering a German suplex on the floor. Kidd eventually rolled a hurt Kingston into the ring, and the match was officially underway, both men exchanging stinging chops before Gabe bit at the head of the champion. Eddie fired back with a big exploder to finally get distance as the match wore on.
Eddie kept himself in the fight, but was constantly having to work underneath his uncouth challenger. Kingston escaped a piledriver and landed a backfist for a near two; as the two reset, more slaps and headbutts were traded, but when Kidd mocked the champion with a spit to the face after overhand rights he unleashed a monster in Kingston. A hard backfist scored big for Eddie but Kidd rolled to the floor.
The match continued where it started, with both men exchanging blows on the floor. Now it was Kingston landing a massive suplex on the outside, an exploder scoring, but when Kingston was about to take a countout win, Kidd used the house mic to call out ‘b**ch’ Eddie, and a double countout ensued.
Kidd picked up the AEW Continental Crown Championship belt and hurled it aside to even more anger from Kingston. Eddie wanted to continue the fight, but was jumped by the rest of the War Dogs, and a piledriver left the champion unconscious in center ring.
