In the semi main, Tanahashi teams with David Finlay to face IWGP champion Kazuchika Okada and Chuckie T. Okada and Tanahashi resurrected a dormant rivalry on a tag match March 15 in Korakuen. Okada has had ten successful defenses of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, one short of the record for most dominant title reign. That record is held by Hiroshi Tanahashi, and the Ace has extra motivation to win the New Japan Cup and ensure that he remains the record holder by beating Okada at Sakura Genesis April 1st.

Hamamatsu will also see Tetsuya Naito, BUSHI and Hiromu Takahashi of Los Ingobernables De Japon facing the Suzuki Gun team of Minoru Suzuki, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and El Desperado.
