■ What is a Sukajan?

Originating as souvenir jackets made from left-over parachute silk for US servicemen stationed in Japan during the 1940s & 50s, Sukajan were a popular jacket around the naval port of Yokosuka (where the jacket gets its name). The blend of a Western cut with Japanese designs on the back caused it to become adopted by Japanese youth culture as a rebellious fashion statement in the 1960s amongst working class youth. Frequently shown being worn by bad guys in Japanese movies the Sukajan is sometimes associated with juvenile delinquency and gangsterism and still has something of a bad boy image. Nowadays this timeless style is still popular amongst people looking to make a striking fashion statement.
